After laboring over whether or not to finally buy the luxury import car of your dreams you finally bite the bullet and are now officially the proud owner of a timeless automobile. What’s next?
Aside from taking it for the the obvious joyrides, it is important to go the extra mile and maintain your car to ensure it has a long life ahead of itself. Here are some measures you can take to keep it in great shape throughout your ownership:
1. Change the oil regularly.
While other cars you have driven in the past may not have required frequent oil changes, take note of the specific oil change details recommended by the import manufacturer. For example, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Mercedes all specify very high quality,
specific synthetic motor oils that have very different characteristics from domestic motor oils. With that in mind, changing your oil regularly is the simplest way to prolong the life of your car. Remember, maintenance is ultimately a lot cheaper than potential repairs, especially given the price of imported car parts.
2. Don’t neglect the exterior!
Surprisingly enough, many owners will often forget to tend to the day-to-day wear and tear on their car. Built-up dirt and grime are perpetrators of exterior damage, and washing and waxing your car will keep its appearance looking its best.

When tending to this facet of maintenance, keep in mind that each paint job has its very own wax. However, if you consistently wax your import, you are preserving the life of the paint job, thus preventing you from having to purchase new paint finish. Signs of rust are also red flags, as untreated rusty areas may spread to other parts of the car and impact its functionality.
3. Have regular tune-ups.
This is especially crucial to those who own an older model import, but it’s always a good idea to take your vehicle to your preferred mechanic for routine work. They may be able to expertly catch certain details or irregularities that if not addressed, could result in a large repair bill later down the line.

Wiring on older imports has to be replaced frequently, as they can wear down over time. Similarly, it’s a good idea to replace the battery in the vehicle when it’s nearing the end of its life.
While these may seem like no-brainers to the automobile experts out there, let it serve as a friendly reminder that maintenance is key to prolonging the life of your import and keep it looking great!
